Statistically, Table Mountain is very safe. The cable car only departs when it is safe. If strong winds are predicted, the cable car will be grounded. For visitors already on top of the mountain, a siren will sound notifying them to return to the cable car. As with every tourist attraction all over the world, there have been cases were mountaineers were mugged, lost or injured. But these are few and far between and occurred mostly because of negligence. A few safety tips when visiting Table Mountain:

  • Don't hike alone.
  • Tell someone where you are going and the route you are taking.
  • Rest if you are tired.
  • Start as early as possible.
  • Don't hike at midday.
  • Take sufficient water.
  • Pack a few snacks for energy.
  • Carry a jacket or knitted top, even if it is a hot day.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Don't run down the mountain, it's very easy to slip and lose balance.
  • Keep a little cash in case you decide to take the cable car down.
  • You can also book a local guide to hike with you. The cost is minimal and the experience educational.
