Explore the Heart of District Six: A Journey Through Memory and Heritage

Nestled in the vibrant streets of Cape Town, the Museum of District Six stands as a powerful testament to resilience, community, and the rich tapestry of South Africa’s history. More than just a repository of artifacts, the Museum has transformed into a living space where ex-residents gather, share their stories, and engage in meaningful programmes that preserve the spirit of District Six.

A Welcoming Space for All

The Museum is designed with the visitor in mind, allowing anyone to wander in off the street and embark on a self-guided tour. This immersive experience enables you to explore the rich narratives and historical significance of the area at your own pace. However, for those seeking a deeper understanding, guided tours led by ex-resident storytellers are available. These tours not only provide a unique perspective but also foster a connection between the past and the present. Pre-booked tours are highly recommended to ensure a spot, as walk-in tours are subject to availability. Guided tours are offered Monday to Saturday at the following times:

  • 09:30
  • 10:30
  • 11:30
  • 13:30

Discover the Stories Behind the Streets

The Museum goes beyond traditional exhibitions; it offers guided site walks led by former residents who intimately understand the area’s history. These site walks must be booked in advance and are contingent upon favourable weather conditions. If you prefer, you can also wander through the vacant sites on your own, gaining a profound sense of the magnitude of the destruction that occurred during forced removals. As a site nominated for National Heritage status and currently holding provisional Grade 1 status, the area demands sensitivity and respect from all who visit.

Entrance Fees: A Commitment to Accessibility

In our commitment to preserving the history and culture of District Six, the Museum aims to provide affordable access to all visitors. While we strive to give adequate notice for any changes in entrance fees, please be aware that adjustments may occur without prior announcement.

Here’s a breakdown of the entrance fees:

  • Free Entrance:

    • South African pensioners
  • Self-Guided Visit: R 60
  • With Ex-Resident Guide: R 75
